Project Brief
‘Objects of Incarceration’ is in response to the Mass Incarceration currently taking place in the United States. An epitome to the larger U.S society, the criminal justice system has become a system of inequality. While such inequality is detrimental to those affected, the general public has often considered such issues as either irrelevant or of less priority, and thus lacks the initiation to become involved. The lack of understanding of the magnitude of this problem has created a fake safety shield for those who thought things are irrelevant, when in fact, everyone is impacted.
This project narrates stories of participants of the criminal justice system through image of objects. Those objects are often everyday objects we encounter daily without knowing its significance in contributing to the ‘Mass Incarceration’. This project specifically tell stories from individual participants perspective, thus giving each participants a platform to voice their experience on this issue rather than learning from a single point of view. This project hopes to provide the general public a glimpse of the diverse participants of the criminal justice system and the wide range of issues/problems each participant face.
Currently, the stories are adapted from online publications with images extracted by the curator. The project however, seeks to become a platform to collect new stories along with images. There will be monthly updates to the online catalog that share new perspectives and/or objects.
